Fear and Courage in the Democratic Party

About Democratic Courage

Democratic Courage is dedicated to electing a progressive, courageous, and winning Democratic presidential candidate. It is made up of leaders and activists in the progressive movement. We believe that political courage is the key to political victory. Americans want a president who will stand strong for his or her beliefs - and not back down in the face of lobbyist pressure or Republican attacks.

Glenn Hurowitz, President

"Glenn is a brilliant emerging star in the progressive movement." - Matt Stoller, OpenLeft.com.

In addition to serving as president of Democratic Courage, Glenn Hurowitz is the author of the new book Fear and Courage in the Democratic Party. He contributes to The American Prospect and writes about progressive politics and the environment for The Huffington Post (America's most popular political blog) and Grist magazine (the web's premiere environmental news and analysis site). In the summer of 2007, he co-authored a New York Times op-ed with author William Powers about how providing financial incentives to protect tropical forests could be a vital part of the solution to the global climate crisis. Glenn recently finished writing his first book, Fear and Courage in the Democratic Party.

Before starting his work on the book, Glenn served as Deputy National Field Director for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG), a nationwide environmental, democracy, and consumer advocacy group, where he helped run one of America's biggest and most effective political field operations. At PIRG, Glenn helped lead the fight to save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, secure a clean energy future, and protect America's national forests.

Prior to his work at PIRG, Glenn was the Associate Director for WILD PAC, a political action committee that works to elect wilderness champions to all levels of government. Glenn has worked on a number of electoral campaigns, most recently as South Florida Lead Organizer for MoveOn PAC in the 2004 presidential election.

In 2002, Glenn completed a fellowship with Green Corps, the field school for environmental organizing, which trains the next generation of environmental, social change, and political leaders. Glenn remains active in fundraising and recruitment for Green Corps. He also serves on the board of the American Lands Alliance.

Glenn received a degree in political science from Yale University, where he was the winner of the Frank M. Patterson Political Science Award and the Yale University Suisman Reporting Prize for outstanding journalism on the Yale Daily News, where he was a reporter, editorials editor, and columnist.
